Overall Summary
This semester, I am grateful for the opportunity to return to CICC and work with my Field Placement Supervisor, Cristina. As a Resource Consultant, she offers individual consultation, program consultation, as well as training consultation to families and childcare staff.
I had an incredible placement under Cristina’s leadership, where I gained significant knowledge about the Resource Consultant role. I was actively involved in various tasks, including visiting childcare centers for observations, writing consultation summaries with recommendations, scoring developmental screening questionnaires, analysis of sensory behaviour inventory assessment. I also practiced creating developmental screening reports, participating in ISP meetings and joining an Occupational Therapy session for a child. I also worked on creating resources such as social stories, providing research-based community resources such as Resource Consultant Monthly Tip Sheet. Through this experience, I learned important concepts such as setting SMART (simple, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely) goals (“Every Child Belongs Resource Consultation Service Guidelines,” 2020) and using the “Praise Sandwich” technique (Making a Praise Sandwich, n.d.) when writing reports or communicating with others.
Looking back on the three goals I set for myself from the mid-term reflection, I am proud of the significant progress I’ve made. I took proactive steps, such as rearranging my placement schedule to participate in an OT visit at a childcare center, which was a valuable learning experience. I also dedicated time to researching and reading articles about child development, particularly focusing on the developmental stages of infants and toddlers.
Additionally, I took the initiative to engage with educators, seeking their insights and gathering additional information to help me prepare a more evidence-based report. This collaborative effort enhanced my understanding and skills.
I am truly grateful for my mentor’s unwavering support throughout this journey. She shared invaluable resources and offered guidance that has empowered me to work towards my future role as a Resource Consultant with confidence and enthusiasm.
